You may have heard the tried and true line, “The best time to look for a job is when you have a job.” But is that really all there is to it?
If you’ve found yourself looking for work in the past few years, you know the rules have changed. The question is, are you ready? Seriously…right now. Are you?
I just had a friend laid off by her company last week. No notice. During “the recovery”. Surprise. What about you? Are you ready?
1. Is your Résumé up to date? — Tip: Freshen it up every 3 months — add one accomplishment with the facts (cost, time, etc)
2. Do you know who your friends are? — Get on LinkedIn right now and start linking up with your contacts – then, write recommendations for the ones that deserve them
3. Are you staying up in your field? — Are you reading books, magazines or even blogs to keep up on changes? If not…ready for the tip? Read books, magazines or even blogs to keep up in your field. If your field is too boring for a blog, you may need to get a new field.
These are pretty basic tips, but just doing these three things will begin to insulate you from the possibility of being unprepared if a change comes in your job. Just like my friend last week, or lots of others over the last few years, you never know when you might be in the job market.
Take the small steps now to stay ready, and you’ll be at the front of the pack when it’s time to start that next hunt!
