Shane Purnell has a Podcast (available on ITunes) called “Platform Giant” where he promotes building your platform, whether that is on the physical stage or the virtual one.
In his 90 minute training session, Shane covered just how you (yes you) can have a Podcast of your own. Specifically, the power of podcasting for the public speaker.
A podcast has three elements
– Downloadable digital file on a server – Audio, Video or PDF
– Serial or Episodic in Nature
– Delivered via RSS Feed (like a subscription)

What is my show about?
Shane has a great worksheet that helped his audience consider what they are passionate about (5 things), what they’re good at (5 things) and what problems they solve for others (5 things). After listing these attributes, he asked up to list 3 ideas that merge the passions, talents and market.
Next we did a quick brainstorming on our first 10 podcasts in one of those 3 ideas. Surprisingly, I saw that much of the audience had filled out those 10 podcast titles.
Who is my audience?
– Demographics – good to start, but not the definition of your audience
– Psychographics – interest level
– Avatars – your ideal listener
How do I help them?
– I help ________

My example: “I help Project Managers understand Agile so that They can be successful in their PM career”
What is my show’s style?
– Topical i.e. a deep dive on a topic
– Magazine i.e updates on a topic like baseball, Apple, etc.
– Stories i.e. “Serial”
– Morning Show – panelist, group show, etc.
One interesting point that came up – don’t be afraid to send the questions in advance
Another person who has been interviewed mentioned that some podcasters have asked her for questions that she would like them to ask
Equipment – “get good equipment” – the quality of your equipment will matter to your listeners

Exporting & Converting
– Export as a .wav (better than as an mp3 to allow other software to clean up)
– Levelator (still available for free) & Auphonic (up to two hours a month free converting to mp3)
DO NOT use Audacity! – the L.A.M.E mp3 encoder is lame!
Use iTunes – will use a very good encoder to create your mp3
