For a Toastmaster, July 1st is the start of the new program year. Just like the start of the calendar year, conversations drift to “what is your Toastmasters new year’s resolution?”
When I ever talk to anyone about resolutions, they seem to fall into one of 3 categories:
The few – those who make resolutions and stick to them. Most resources I found suggest this number is less than 10%.
The proud – those who refuse to make resolutions.
The rest of us – those who fail by February or otherwise set resolutions that don’t achieve the results we want.
In Dan Pink’s bestseller, When, he talks about how powerful tying the start of something to a date. Whether you are starting a new diet on Monday or waiting for the next big holiday, attaching you goal to a specific dat can be a powerful way to anchor your efforts.
In the U.S. at this time of year, July 4th, the start of school and Labor Day are all great times to begin that next effort.
Set that next resolution…get started…do you next big thing.
