Joyce Layman, president of the Kansas City chapter of the National Speakers Association was the keynote speaker at our District 22 Spring Conference in Wichita Kansas.
She also presented an outstanding education session titled, Mindset, Motivation & Change.
“What are your alligators?”
Joyce talked about we set ourselves up to add obstacles on our own through our mindset, and how we talk to ourselves. I liked the exercise where we told a partner a goal, and they would give us a list of reason that goal won’t happen. Joyce used this to illustrate the kinds of things we tell ourselves.
The idea to change your mindset to change your results is not an unknown idea, but Joyce’s presentation gave a unique opportunity to look at our own internal voices and understand not only how our voices and wording can not only affect ourselves, and how we impact our children and coworkers.
For motivation, Joyce suggested looking at what, why and how you do what you do, then look at obstacles and opportunities, look for the wins and then “Move the box” – make a goal to do something that you can do, not some multi-day task. Don’t try to tackle is all, just move the box.
Her handout included a great quote, “Motivation doesn’t last and neither does bathing, that’s why we recommend it daily.” – Zig Ziglar
